WHAT CAN SNAIL DO FOR YOU?

AMANDA LORGE  on  FEBRUARY 4, 2020

Snail is my favorite skincare ingredient. It’s an ingredient that has done wonders for my skin and is beloved in the skincare community. You may be thinking, “What exactly is snail and what can it do for me?” I am so glad you asked…

Let’s clear up a misnomer. Snail in skin care is not made from defenseless little snails removed from gardens around the world, only to then be blended into skincare products. My mom believes this misnomer and threatens the snails in her garden with this. She tells them her daughter will turn them into a face mask if they don’t leave her plants alone.

The ingredient “snail” is known by a few names such as snail mucin, snail secretion filtrate and snail slime, to name a few. Snail mucin is the secreted foamy substance made when a snail is disturbed. That foamy substance is a wonderful ingredient we use in our skincare.

Snail mucin contains hyaluronic acid and glycolic acid, two ingredients well known to skincare enthusiasts. Hyaluronic acid is best known for its ability to assist in hydrating the skin. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that pulls moisture into your skin from other sources such as a moisturizer or serum. It really is a powerhouse  ingredient! Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA)  that exfoliates dead skin cells and leaves your skin smooth. Glycolic acid achieves this purpose with its  small molecules size as enables it to penetrate your skin quite easily.

So, is your interest now piqued with snail? Snail is an ingredient within a variety of products, so there should be no trouble finding a product that works for you. Try the Mizon Snail Recovery Gel Cream as a light moisturizer. Want to try snail in your toner? Give the Some By Mi Snail Truecica Miracle Repair Toner a try. Love a sheet mask? Try the Benton Snail Bee High Content Mask. Looking for a new cleanser? Try the Tiam Snail & Azulene Low pH Cleanser.
