THE CACTUS TONER YOU MUST-TRY: HUXLEY EXTRACT IT TONER

AMY DANG on APRIL 14, 2020

Ah yes, I am jumping on the Huxley bandwagon. Skincare aficionados have probably already heard about Huxley and its impeccable, luxurious aesthetic (that comes with equally luxurious pricing). Minimalist packaging design in muted, pastel-toned colours…The brand is just a walking ~aesthetic~ that definitely tickles my marketing side. You gotta give it to Huxley, their branding is really on point. But I’m not here to do a marketing analysis…today, I’ll be reviewing their much talked about Huxley Extract It Toner, which is part of the ‘Secret of Sahara’ line.

In this house, we appreciate an aesthetically pleasing feed.

I had actually first heard high praises about this toner from a friend, and then decided to try it out myself. After about 6 months of continual use during my morning routine, I figured it was about time I wrote about it!

THE TONER

The Huxley Extract It Toner boasts over 90% naturally derived ingredients such as cactus extract. Its benefits are threefold: it provides rich moisture, uses natural ingredients over purified water, and is mild and non-irritating. The toner is also slightly acidic to match the skin’s own natural pH level (which ranges from 4 to 6 on the pH scale) and is thus able to provide proper pH balance to the skin following a cleanser.

THE SMELL

Do you know what a cactus smells like? Have you ever even gotten close enough to one to smell it? I’ll be honest and say I never really knew or paid attention to the smell of cacti, but boy, has this toner given me a whole new perspective. Upon application, my olfactory senses were greeted with a wonderfully pleasant aroma — fresh, herbal and simply amazing. The fragrance is quite strong so it could be overwhelming for people with fragrance sensitivities. But for me personally, this toner is a pure joy to apply every morning and does wonders to wake me up.

Here is a great graph to describe the exact fragrance notes

THE FEELING

Consistency wise, this toner is very lightweight and practically feels like water. It was a surprising sensation at first, given that my prior toner experiences had always been slightly more viscous. I’ve gotten used to the liquid consistency now and actually prefer it, because it absorbs to the skin SO FAST and leaves it super hydrated. No stickiness too! There’s just something so satisfying about a toner that absorbs quickly. It especially does wonders during those drier months when your skin is just pleading for more moisture. Even with my slightly oily / combination skin, I can still appreciate the hydration, so I can only imagine what people with dry skin will feel.

All in all, the Huxley toner has done just as it claims. It’s nourishing, provides great moisture, and preps my skin for the next steps of my routine. While it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what the benefits of the toner are, given that I use so many different products, I can say that it’s been consistent throughout my nearly 6 months of use. I may have switched serums, lotions and creams numerous times, but have stuck to the Huxley toner and it’s never reacted badly to other products. I could probably attribute some of those good benefits to that!

THE INGREDIENTS

The key to the Huxley Extract It Toner is its cactus extract, which comes from the Sahara’s prickly pear seed oil, a certified safe and organic ingredient that boasts greater moisturizing effects than argan oil due to its high linoleic acid content. The toner also contains 400 times more Vitamin E content than olive oil, which provides great anti-aging benefits. Additionally, when paired with rosa centifolia and capre myrtle extract, the toner not only moisturizes but also soothes the skin and improves its pH balance. Bonus point: the toner has been hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested!

Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem Extract, Propanediol, Dipropylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed Oil, Lagerstroemia Indica Flower Extract, Rosa Centifolia Flower Extract, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Xanthan Gum, Butylene Glycol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Water, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragrance

THE TAKEAWAY

Given that toner is a crucial step in a skincare routine, I think investing in a product that will truly nourish and balance your skin’s pH level is imperative. The Huxley Extract It Toner is definitely on the pricier side…But I’d recommend giving it a shot if you’re on the market for a lightweight toner that absorbs to the skin easily while also providing much needed hydration. Plus, the huge bottle has lasted me nearly 6 months and I’m not even halfway through it yet. You’ll definitely get some bang for your buck!
